From the
Executive Director

January 1st is the time many of us establish and begin to work toward completing a New Year's resolution. Whether it's something as simple as throwing out one item at home daily, or volunteering one's time to a local youth group, or committing oneself to an ongoing challenge - such as training to climb Mount Whitney - each year begins with a vision for a brighter tomorrow.

My goals as Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission's Executive Director are to lead the agency on its continued path of success and help Valley residents break the cycle of poverty. Our success means that more individuals and families have a place to call home; entrepreneurs have the financial resources to start or expand their dream business; infants and children have hope for a healthy tomorrow; and teens and young adults in crisis have the support and guidance needed to overcome any obstacle.

We will meet these goals with the support of two very important groups - EOC's staff and its Board of Commissioners. In this edition of Change, learn more about our tripartite Board of Commissioners and who was recently appointed or elected to serve a two-year term. These amazing men and women volunteer their time and dedicate themselves to fulfilling our vision.

In the heart of the winter season, with temperatures dipping in the 30s, our Home Energy Assistance and Emergency Crisis Intervention programs are working harder than ever helping people overcome those harsh winter nights and high energy bills that can leave many out in the cold. Learn how these programs work and how, since 1973, they have helped keep the lights on and homes warm during these cold winter months.

Finally, we end this edition of Change on a positive note and introduce you to Yasmin. Having survived a violent seven-year relationship, Yasmin found the courage to leave the abuse. She found sanctuary in our Transitional Living Center, a program dedicated to changing lives by promoting independent living to homeless young adults.

"Helping People. Changing Lives." is more than just our motto, more than a New Year's resolution, but our purpose. Remember, you too can play an important part in this vision. Challenge yourself to make a difference; how will you better our community and help those in need in 2011?

Sincerely,

Brian Angus
Executive Director
